Text in Textiles with Makeda Duong | 1 DAY
Create your own textile artwork in this hands-on, concept-driven workshop led by visual artist Makeda Duong.
The single-day session will begin with an introduction to incorporating written text into textile works; participants will then spend time contemplating and refining ideas for a written piece through provided prompts and simple idea generation exercises. Students will be encouraged to select or develop their own short sentence of text that provokes a specific feeling or memory; be it a favourite quote or idiom, a line of poetry, or a past interaction.
Participants will then be guided through the process of plotting out individual letters onto aida cloth – with consideration to the overall composition, spacing, colour, lettering style and decorative embellishment – before cross-stitching their piece in embroidery thread.
All writing and embroidery tools and materials will be supplied; participants are encouraged to bring references (books, magazines, notebooks) to draw inspiration from if desired. Students will take home their own cross-stitched piece, specialist embroidery needle and the foundational skills required to continue stitching at home.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners, no prior experience required.
