Receive an introduction to a broad range of fundamental ceramic processes, skills and principles required to run a ceramic studio practice in this eight-week course led by JamFactory Ceramics Studio Manager Phoebe Kretschmer.

Each week will cover different practical aspects of running a studio. Participants will explore the individual characteristics and use of different clay bodies, learn basic slip casting techniques, experiment with various decorative applications (including sgraffito, engobe, and colouring with stains and oxides), mix mid-fire and high-fire glazes whilst uncovering the chemistry behind glaze development and composition, learn about kiln technology and efficient firing procedures, and gain an understanding of the principles and processes involved with clay recycling.

This comprehensive introductory course is ideal for ceramicists looking to upscale or incorporate new techniques into their practice, or setting up their own studio space. All ceramic tools and materials are supplied; participants will need to bring a notebook and pen for taking notes. Basic experience required (completion of a JamFactory introduction-level ceramics course or equivalent).

Phoebe Kretschmer

Phoebe Kretschmer's creative journey began during her studies in Interior Architecture at UniSA, where her love and appreciation for objects and furniture first grew. After graduating in 2011, she worked in retail store design. Kretschmer moved to Vancouver in 2014, where she discovered pottery at HiDe Ceramic Works, a small Japanese studio founded by Hidenori Ebina; here, she learned and taught pottery, assisting with commissions and studio operations and became captivated by the transformative potential of clay. Returning to Australia in 2018, Phoebe set up a home studio and, in 2021, joined the JamFactory Ceramics department, where she currently works as the Studio Manager.

In Phoebe's work, nature serves as her primary muse, infusing her creations with the organic forms, textures, and imagery she finds in the natural world. Influenced by her early training under Ebina, she is drawn to the philosophy of wabi-sabi, which celebrates imperfection and authenticity. She utilizes both wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, enjoying how clay changes under touch, creating movements with immediacy, and that through the alchemy of the firing process, these moments are captured in time.
