Beginners Sand Casting Workshop with Kirra-lea Caynes | 1 DAY
Join trade-qualified contemporary jeweller Kirra-lea Caynes in a one day introduction to sand casting; a process that involves placing stones inside a mould, and pouring molten metal into the mould to allow it to set stones within a chosen form. Designed for beginners with no previous experience as well as more advanced jewellers who are interested in growing their skill-set.
Students will be guided through the process of casting their own sterling silver jewellery with cast-in-place sapphires and finish the workshop with a selection of unique, hand-made jewellery pieces.
All required materials are provided: 30g of sterling silver and a variety of rough Australian sapphires which will allow participants to make up to 3 pieces of jewellery to take home. If you require more than 30g of silver, there will be the option to purchase more on the day (cash, bank-transfer and card options accepted).
Sand casting can be used to replicate almost any hard object to be turned into jewellery (eg. shells, buttons, small toys). There will be an extensive array of solid objects available to mould and cast, however you are welcome to bring your own to explore and use in the casting process. You may also bring your own metal and sapphires if you wish to personalise your project with your own materials. (Please note that gemstones used in the cast-in-place process should be 7.5 or higher on the Mohs hardness scale.)
