'Chase Your Own Way' Masterclass with Julie Blyfield | 1 DAY

Regular price $220.00

'Chase Your Own Way'
Chasing Masterclass with Julie Blyfield

Immerse yourself in the technique of chasing - a process of shaping and texturing metal without cutting or engraving the surface - with renowned jeweller and metalsmith Julie Blyfield. Suitable for participants with prior jewellery-making experience, this technique-based workshop will focus on experimentation and skills development.

The session will begin with drawing and idea development, with the use of a personal collection of objects as inspiration for new designs to be interpreted and transferred onto metal using carbon paper.

Participants will be guided through various chasing techniques, including:

  • line working on metal
  • building texture using multiple chasing tools
  • creating volume and form by working the metal from one side and/or both sides
  • making tube

Students will need to bring:

  • a pitch bowl, chasing hammer and a selection of chasing tools
  • collection of 10 objects for reference (interesting forms and textures encouraged)

Stationery for drawing and tools for cutting and soldering will be supplied, as well as three 6cm square pieces of .5mm copper for chasing. Students may wish to bring sterling silver and/or extra copper to work with if desired (.5mm thickness).

Emphasis will be placed on experimentation, creating samples, concept development and class discussion; a final piece may be started if time permits. The repoussé process (hammering from the reverse side) will also be discussed, however the coursework will predominantly focus on chasing. Please note that the making of chasing tools will not be covered in this workshop, due to time constraints.

This session is suitable for students with basic jewellery making skills (or previous participants of JamFactory's level 1 silver jewellery course or equivalent experience).
