ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Mr. Tjilya was a founding artist and Chairman of Tjurma Arts, an art centre established on Tjurma homelands nearby to the Amata community. He is son of Katanari Tjilya and nephew to Hector Burton. For many years Mr. Tjilya was the rising star of the men's ceramic studio.
He began working at Ernabella Arts as a part-time employee in 2015 and was appointed Deputy Chair in 2016. In 2015 he first tried his hand at ceramics and was exhibited in 'Yangupula Tjuta Waakarinyi: Many Young People Working', presented by Sabbia Gallery (touring to Canberra as part of the Ceramics Triennale), and 'Wati tjuta-ku Tjukurpa kunpu ngaranyi' (the annual men's ceramic exhibition) at Raft Space in Alice Springs.
Mr. Tjilya's exhibited most recently in a group exhibition at Araluen Art Gallery, Alice Springs, NT, in 2022 titled 'Clay on Country' as part of the Australian Ceramics Triennale.

ABOUT THE ART CENTRE:
Established in 1948, Ernabella Arts is Australia’s oldest, continuously running Indigenous Art Centre. Ernabella Arts is in Pukatja Community, at the eastern end of the Musgrave Ranges in the far north west of South Australia. Pukatja was the first permanent settlement on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands (APY Lands).
In recent years, long after commencing working as artists, senior women decided to leave behind the walka (design) of the early days and to depict their Tjukurpa (sacred stories of country and law). Today the centre is a varied group of artists, and a mix of young and old, men and women, working in several different mediums. The members of Ernabella Arts are always reinvigorating their centre, seeing it through its evolution from the first incarnation as a craft room, into a culturally strong contemporary art centre.
