Our bodies are our most important tool, yet as artists and makers we are renowned for working long hours and experiencing repetitive strain injuries which can severely effect our enthusiasm and ability to stay engaged in our work. How can we maintain pleasure in our practice and sustain a long and healthy working life?
Designed for people of all levels of experience working in a wide variety of mediums, this workshop will include discussions about the role of your body in your creative practice and a movement lesson in sitting, with an emphasis on improving movement and seated posture to gain more efficient use of your hands and arms. The benefits of this include better levels of attention, more efficient coordination and easier breathing leading to more enjoyable years of making.
Intended for artists, makers and designers of any experience level (from emerging, mid-career and established creatives) and discipline, this workshop is suitable for any participant looking to increase their knowledge and understanding of body movement for a more sustainable creative practice.

Catherine Truman has maintained a full-time arts practice for over 40 years incorporating contemporary jewellery, objects, digital image and film installation. Suffering bouts of repetitive stain injury early in her career has informed and enriched her practice in surprising ways. Working across the disciplines of art and science, she is qualified in the Feldenkrais Method of movement education. See here and here for more info about the Feldenkrais method in Australia.

"The aim is a body that is organised to move with minimum effort and maximum efficiency, not through muscular strength but increased consciousness of how it works."
-- Moshe Feldenkrais
