ABOUT THE ARTIST

With a background in Art History, Connor’s studies in traditional decorative metalworking have taken him halfway around the globe. Now, his practice revolves around synthesising his academic interests with his needs as an artmaker, as he incorporates traditional techniques into contemporary work as way of achieving “preservation through practice.”

How can you paint with metal?

Also referred to as the ‘Teppitsu’ or ‘Iron Brush’, engravers of the past found ways of using their chisels to mimic the strokes of the painter and the calligrapher. The real beauty of their technique (Katakiri-bori) is revealed as light plays across each bold cut, and suddenly the design flickers to life in the hand.

Traditions come to life in the hands of their makers, and right at the intersection between modern machining and traditional craft, IRON BRUSH embodies the union of old and new …and the spirit of the hand that made it.
