Decorative Underglaze with Golshad Asami | 2 DAYS

Learn the basics of mixing and applying coloured underglaze decoration to earthenware pottery in this workshop led by JamFactory Ceramics Production Manager Golshad Asami. In this two-day workshop set over two weeks, participants will learn about underglaze composition, how to create their own colour palette and apply underglaze to greenware pottery with brushes and other tools and decorative techniques such as sgraffito to paint their own set of two small plates.

In the first session, participants will work on prepared tiles to practice their application technique, test colours, experiment with layering and consider an overall design to work on in the second session. Tiles will be fired with a clear glaze in-between the first and second session, so that students have an opportunity to assess their test pieces before applying a final design to a prepared plate. (Each participant will be provided with two small plates to work on.)

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. All tools and materials are supplied, including a selection of underglaze colours, prepared test tiles and two small plates. Students may wish to bring a notebook and pencil to take notes and sketch ideas. Finished pieces will be glazed and fired in JamFactory's Ceramics Studio, to be collected 2-3 weeks after workshop concludes.


Golshad Asami

Golshad studied Ceramic Science Engineering in her home country of Iran, where she also worked in ceramic production factories. Now an Australian resident, Goli manages ceramic production at JamFactory, lending her experience in slip casting to studio activities including commissions and the development of new products. In her own creative practice, she is passionate about the decorative arts and painting, combining her illustrative skills with her ceramics practice in the form of painted underglaze pieces that reflect her cultural heritage.
