Gain practical skills and fundamental knowledge of the properties of various metals commonly used in furniture, industrial and interior design, with a focus on the context and history of metals and production methods within Australia.
Hosted in JamFactory's Jewellery and Metal Studio, the session will begin with a tour of the teaching studio and machine room, which provides facilities for production and commissions as well as JamFactory's associate program for creative practitioners, and public short course program.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will receive an introduction to a range of metals and their unique characteristics and other considerations such as:
- introduction to commonly-used tools and machinery in metal fabrication
- sustainable design, product lifespan and recycling
- how to select and maintain different materials with final use and environmental factors in mind
- surface treatments to achieve various finishes for colour, texture and/or durability
This professional development program will comprise a tour, informal information session, discussion, hands-on demonstrations and practical application of knowledge through a series of small skills-based exercises in 6 different metals. Students will be guided through a variety of techniques such as folding, hand-hammering, applying patinas and brush-finishing individual samples to take home in a custom-made sample holder.
Students will complete the session with their own selection of 9-10 metal samples in 6 different metals and a certificate of completion for the accrual of 5 formal CPD points. This session is designed for architects seeking Continuing Professional Development, however participants of any profession are welcome to take part. No prior experience in metal-work required.
