Botany vase in blown and hand etched glass by South Australian artist Alexandra Hirst.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Alex first developed an interest in glass during her undergrad in sculpture through a university exchange program at Alfred University (NY, USA). She was instantly drawn to the complexity of the material, and the collaborative aspect of glassblowing. Alex has since developed her technical skills through university courses at ANU in Canberra, and a Masters in Glass at Edinburgh College of Art in the UK, where she explored integrating digital processes in glass blowing and creating large scale glass assemblies. She has assisted at several studios including Backhaus Brown in Denmark, and had the privilege of learning from and assisting leading glass artists worldwide. After completing her Masters, Alex joined the Associate program at JamFactory to fully form her technical skills and build her practice. Alex predominantly use glass in her work, however to accentuate an artwork she may incorporate light, sound, mixed media and or people's interaction.
