Handpainted Earthenware Mug by South Australian artist Gerry Wedd.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gerry Wedd was born in McLaren Vale on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula and grew up at Port Noarlunga. His mother Felicity Wedd was a potter and he started throwing pots with her in the mid-1970s. After leaving school, he obtained an advanced craft certificate at TAFE, specialising in jewellery. In 1980, he moved to Willunga where he made pottery and jewellery for sale in local shops. During the 1980s, he also surfed competitively at state championship level. In the mid-1980s, he studied ceramics at the South Australian School of Art and was later employed there as a lecturer.

He was an access tenant at the Jam Factory and, in 1990, co-founded the Jamboree Workshops at Welland, SA, with Jo Crawford and Peter Johnson. At around this time, he started designing and creating ceramics, textiles, posters, clothing, metalwork and surfboards for Mambo, a relationship that lasted until 2006. In 2002, he and his wife moved to Port Elliott where he still lives and works.

In 2007, he completed a Master of Arts at the South Australian School of Art with a thesis entitled "Pot culture - domestic ceramics as subversive texts". His work is inspired by early Chinese willow-pattern plates and vessels which he combines with witty social commentary.
