ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Silvana Guidet is a ceramic artist currently based in South Australia. Originally from Adelaide where she began practising pottery at the (then existant) craft studio of the University of Adelaide, Silvana has been based in France for the past 36 years. She returned to pottery in 2020 enrolling in a ceramic art course at l'Ecole d'Art Céramique de Vallauris, specialising in making ceramic moulds and in raku glazing and firing techniques. 
In 2025 Silvana undertook a nerikomi workshop with the France-based Japanese artist Yuko Kuramatsu. Since returning to Adelaide at the end of 2025 she has focused on this technique, creating vibrantly coloured and organically patterned utilitarian pieces.

Nerikomi is a traditional Japanese technique where patterns are created by colouring the porcelain clay and assembling the different colours in such a way as to create a pattern which goes all the way through the clay. The high-fired white porcelain vitrifies and reveals the colours of the oxide stains without the need for glazing, allowing for a beautiful, smooth, non-glossy finish to the pieces. Nerikomi is a slow and technically demanding process but Silvana is drawn and fascinated by the scope it offers for creating poetic and infinitely diverse patterns. Silvana uses the Porcelain Nerikomi Technique to create trinket dish sets with a kaleidoscope of different patterns.
