JamFactory Barossa:
Workshops at Seppeltsfield Estate

Inspired by the craft of paper folding, this workshop will introduce participants to the transformative process of forming silver-clay paper into a unique pendant or pair of earrings using 99.9% fine silver clay (a material that begins as soft, paper-like clay and transforms into solid silver when fired) with Adelaide-based multidisciplinary artist and jeweller Shirley Wu.

After practicing their designs in origami paper, Shirley will guide participants through the handling and manipulation of silver-clay paper, how to apply origami-inspired folds, and experimenting with cutting, tightening, rolling and gluing techniques to create unique designs. Participants will also learn how to attach earring or pendant findings to complete their pieces, ready for wear.

No prior origami or jewellery making experience is required; this workshop welcomes beginners and encourages experimentation with fun, accessible methods. (Some simple origami folds will be covered; for more complex or specific designs, you may wish to look up some instructions before or during the workshop.)

Each participant will create one pendant or one pair of earrings, including jump rings and/or earring findings (such as hooks or hoops). Please note that chains are not included for pendants. Due to kiln space requirements, all pieces will be fired after the session; finished works will be available for collection approximately one week after the workshop, from JamFactory Seppeltsfield or Adelaide.

  • All tools and materials will be provided: A 5x5cm silver-clay paper sheet is included in the workshop fee, with options to upgrade to larger sizes or purchase extra material on the day
  • Silver-clay paper is thicker and softer than traditional origami paper; if you have a specific origami design in mind, please ensure it can be folded within a 4x4cm or 6x6cm format.
  • Please bring reading glasses if you require them for detailed work
  • Please note that depending on the folding style, some surfaces may not achieve a highly polished finish. Due to the delicacy of the thin silver-clay paper, very fine sections may be fragile and could distort or snap during polishing or daily wear; this can be avoided by avoiding long, thin sections that protrude from the main form.
