Villain Chair
Villain Chair by Riley Hearn
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Riley Hearn is a designer+maker working predominantly in timber to produce furniture and practical objects, based on Kaurna Yerta (Adelaide, South Australia). Hearn’s practice currently focuses on hand-shaping precise geometrical forms, and vivid colour-alterations. His approach often leads to work that invites close inspection and rewards interaction; objects of unassuming intricacy that reveal details of utility and delight. Hearn is currently undertaking his first year of JamFactory’s Associate program in the Furniture studio, is an alumnus of the Sturt School For Wood, and holds a Bachelor of Game Design (2019) from Griffith University (Queensland).
The Villain chair’s provocative presence contrasts a crisp framework against the fluid, ergonomic curves of the seat and backrest; demarcating the body-bearing components from the structural. A reflective black finish accentuates this distinction, while crimson accents highlight the cross-braces that ensure the chair is robust. This synthesis of calculated utility and stark visual contrast transforms the chair from a piece of functional joinery into an alluring, quietly dangerous object.
