Animal Mug in decorated earthenware by South Australian artist Lesa Farrant.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Lesa Farrant completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at La Trobe University in 1993, and went on to do a Masters of Visual Arts at the University of South Australia in 2009. Her playful Pussy Cups use decal and surface decoration on a wheel thrown earthenware base.
For her exhibition works, Lesa scours her local beach, Port Willunga, for a range of natural and man-made debris, from which she creates her slip-cast components. These delicate porcelain casts are then constructed to produce specimens of both the indigenous and introduced plant forms of the region. For the native plant specimens, Farrant includes casts of organic material such as sticks, shell and cuttlefish bone; and for the noxious species, she collects what she describes as ‘jewel-like beach rubbish’ of brightly coloured plastic bottle lids, children’s confectionery containers and tennis balls.
