Enhance your understanding of woodworking design and production processes, with a focus on the unique characteristics of timber as a material and how this affects its use in furniture, industrial and interior design in this hands-on professional development program.
Led by JamFactory's Head of Furniture Studio Andrew Carvolth, the session will begin with a tour of the furniture studio, which provides facilities for production and commissions as well as JamFactory's associate program for creative practitioners, and public short course program.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will receive an introduction to the properties of wood as a material, the use and application of different types of timber, common construction and production tools and techniques, and other considerations such as:
- natural characteristics of timber and terminology
- commonly-used machinery and hand tools
- production techniques and processes such as the use of woodworking jigs
- how to identify and work with wood grain and density
- different shaping, carving, gluing, joinery and finishing techniques
- sustainable materials and practices
This professional development program will comprise a tour, informal information session, discussion, hands-on demonstrations and practical application of knowledge through a small skills-based project.
Students will complete the session with their own hand-made project in timber and a certificate of completion for the accrual of 5 formal CPD points. This session is designed for architects seeking Continuing Professional Development; no prior experience in woodworking required.
